Summary of monthly meeting for community association volunteer board members

The Community Association held a monthly meeting on October 30th:

Had a great monthly meeting earlier this evening for the community association – thank you to all the board members as well as community members who attended, we hope to see you again in November.

And welcome to Hang, a new addition to our Members At Large on the board. He joins Dave, Natalie, and Melissa in this role. If you’ve thought about joining the community association as a voting member on the board, but are not sure what you’d like to do, joining as a Member At Large is a great place to start. Members At Large have no specific duties, but attend monthly meetings and are voting board members, help other board members as needed, and sometimes bring new ideas to the group or help us improve on old ones. If you are interested in getting to know more people in the community and finding out how you can actively help in your community, come and check us out.

The next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday, November 27 at 6:30 pm in the staff room at Henry Kelsey School, 16 Valens Drive. Hope to see you there (come for the fudge and stay for the discussion)

WINTER CONTEST for residents of 3×33 (3 by 33):
It’s a little early but since it’s feeling a bit like winter this week, we’ll tell you about what’s coming in December. If you are planning to decorate your yard or home with lights this winter, watch for the Winter Nights, Winter Lights neighbourhood-wide contest that will be happening in December. It’s a random-draw contest so anyone in living in the 3×33 neighbourhoods of Hudson Bay Park, Mayfair or Kelsey Woodlawn will have a chance to win if your name and house/yard photo is drawn! Details on how to enter your name and yard photo, will be here on the Community Association facebook page and also in the December community newsletter delivered to homes.

Volunteer Spotlight – Dave Newton

2013 agm dave newton

The Community Association is very thankful Dave Newton has been volunteering in the community for 14 years. When he first joined, it was to fill the role of Soccer Coordinator for 10 years. He coached when his kids were young and playing soccer, and then stayed on as the community’s soccer coordinator even after his own kids aged out of community-level soccer. In addition, for the past 4 years, he’s been a volunteer Member At Large on the board and is always around to help out at various community events.

Below is a favourite community association photo we have from when Dave was helping at a community BBQ in the park. If you know Dave or recognize him out in the neighbourhood, be sure to say hi and let him know you read about him in the community news.

Thank you for being such a strong and long-time supporter in the community, Dave.

Volunteer Spotlight – Shelley Marshall

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT – Shelley Marshall (part of our indoor programs coordinator team for the community)

The community association wants to thank Shelley Marshall for all the time and effort she gives as a volunteer in her community. Shelley has worn a couple of different hats these past couple of years, and often works quietly behind the scenes so many are not aware of everything she’s doing.

Shelley has had a big role as one of the community association’s indoor coordinators for the past few years, organizing classes for kids and adults, booking the school classrooms and gyms needed for the activities, and also helping find instructors.

What many don’t know, though, is that she played a large role in the successful makeover of the community’s only outdoor rink on Valens Drive this past summer. Rink coordinator, Janet, explained that “Shelley helped every step of the way. She helped organize all the fundraisers. We also met regularly to discuss everything from fundraising to grants, as well as finding volunteers. Once we were close to having the funds in place, we met to discuss all the logistics of tear down and then rebuilding.”

Shelley made a huge difference in her community that will impact our community for years to come. We’re so happy to have her on the community association board again this year – thank you Shelley!

The first community association meeting of the year will take place on Wednesday, September 25th at 6:30 pm in the staff room of Henry Kelsey School on Valens Drive.  If you are a resident of Hudson Bay Park, Mayfair or Kelsey Woodlawn, please join us to find out more about what is going on and what is coming up on our 3 neighbourhoods.

The community association volunteer board urgently needs a new Treasurer for the year (and a Secretary and a couple of Members-at-Large who attend meetings and help out when possible). If you can help this year or are interested in learning more about what the roles are, come to the meeting to get a feel for things. Or email volunteer president, Diane, for more information at .

What does your Community Association do?

Hudson Bay Park / Mayfair / Kelsey Woodlawn Community Association is a non-profit organization run by a board of volunteers. They hold monthly meetings usually on the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm at Ecole Henry Kelsey (16 Valens Drive), and welcome involvement from the community. If you are a community builder and want to help make a difference in your neighbourhood, please join us whether you have just a little time or a lot.

In conjunction with the City of Saskatoon, the community association provides a variety of fitness, recreational sport, and instructional programs for children, youth and adults. Held in neighborhood schools, these programs are offered at a reasonable cost to residents of Hudson Bay Park, Mayfair, and Kelsey Woodlawn, and residents from other neighborhoods are welcome to participate as well.

– maintain the Henry Kelsey outdoor skating rink on Valens Drive and recently completed years of fundraising and grant writing to be able to demolish and rebuild the rink with the help of board members and neighbourhood residents;
– organize an annual Hockey Day in February at the community outdoor rink;
– organize the Community Garden;
– organize annual events like the Spring Clean-up & Picnic, Community Tobogganing Day, and Snowflake Art Project for kids;
– ran online just-for-fun contests like Fall Into (free) Fudge and Winter Nights, Winter Lights for the first time in winter 2018-2019;
– host SUM Theatre live performances in the park every summer;
– design and arrange to deliver a community newsletter 3 x year;
– recently established a youth group within the community association
– arranged for a future mural to be painted by youth in the neighbourhood;
– maintain this facebook page and a website to keep residents up to date on coming events and programs in the neighbourhood, as well as neighbourhood news regarding construction, local business, and more;
– organized the first Neighbourhood Garden Tour this past July;
– supported community residents’ proposal to the city to have a dog park in Pierre Radisson Park.

We are an active community association dedicated to promoting community spirit and giving residents a chance to become involved in their community in big or small ways.

Membership of this Association is open to all people residing in the Hudson Bay Park, Kelsey-Woodlawn, and Mayfair neighbourhoods of Saskatoon.

Meetings take place on the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the staff room at Henry Kelsey School, 16 Valens Drive. We do not meet in the summer months or in December. The school is wheelchair accessible at the front entrance.

Let’s become involved in our community and help make it a strong and vibrant place to live. Small community-building actions by many help build a stronger community for all of us.

TREASURER urgently needed for volunteer community association board

2019 wide eyed dog for begging

URGENTLY NEEDED for the 2019-2020 year

TREASURER – urgently needed ASAP

The volunteer non-profit community association board cannot function well at all without a treasurer. We are in desperate need of a new Treasurer right away. We are not above begging (and possibly bribing with homemade fudge or some other tasty treat you like), but we hope you’ll see this message and get in touch before the big, teary eyes have to be brought out.

From tracking finances to keeping track of fundraising for the new rink, helping sign checks and keeping a close eye on the budget, the Treasurer position is an important one and needs to be filled before our new year kicks off this month. If needed, you can start in October when elections for volunteer positions are held at the AGM on October 16th (AGM = annual general meeting), but the other volunteers would love to know ahead of time (today? tomorrow? ) so they can sleep at night Zzzzzzz 😴

The first monthly meeting for community association volunteers and neighbourhood residents who’d like to simply come out to see what’s been going on and what’s coming up, is on Wednesday, September 25 at 6:30 pm in the staff room of Henry Kelsey School. All positions are for 1 term from September until the following year’s AGM where elections take place.

If you can help your community out this year by being Treasurer, please send a message or email Diane at .
